Karen obtained a dual Master’s degree with honors in Counseling Psychology and
Professional Counseling from the Washington Adventist University in Takoma Park, Maryland. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from The Central American University in Nicaragua (Universidad Centroamericana, UCA). Karen has worked in various settings, including but not limited to the Montgomery
County Child Welfare Services, Linkages to Learning program, providing school-based community and mental health services through a partnership with Montgomery County public schools and the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services. She has trained at the YMCA and the Maryland Treatment Center for Addiction. Karen is bilingual, with Spanish-English mastery, and has great cultural competence and experience working with diverse cultural communities.

She is passionate about helping individuals, children, youth, and families. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience with crisis intervention, anger management, addiction problems, adolescent crisis, and community
resources. Her experience migrating to a new country gives her a unique perspective on acculturation and assimilation. Karen has extensive experience working with families providing parenting skills, strategies to raise challenging children, and family dynamics. She utilizes various modalities in her work including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Solution-Focused Therapy, and person-centered therapy. Karen focuses on the client’s individual needs, while recognizing where everyone is emotionally. She believes that every individual has the potential to create their own path towards happiness.
